I love this city.

You might say that I’m fairly typical of the kind of success story that Toronto produces all the time.

My parents are British, and I was born in England. When our family first moved to Canada, we originally settled in Montreal where I grew up. We moved back to Britain in 1971 before finally settling in Toronto in 1974.

As a young man, I returned to the U.K. for a period, and experienced first hand the ingrained and overt class consciousness that is so much a part of life there, and was made to feel every bit a third class citizen because I had a job as a labourer.

This was something I had never been exposed to in Canada, and was one of the most important reasons why I eventually left England for good. That experience only made me more aware of how critical it is not to judge people, but to give them the same respect that any of us would want to be accorded, based on our character and not our appearance or supposed social status.

It’s something I’ve never forgotten in my relationships with other people and especially in my career, and is one of the most important lessons which Annette and I have tried to teach our boys by our example.

In the 1970’s, Toronto was busy transforming itself from shy little ‘Hogtown,’ to a bustling and dynamic world class city, full of opportunities and experiences to be found no where else on Earth.

It was a place where new cultures and new citizens were welcome to become a part of the diverse fabric of life here with that warm sense of tolerance and respect that Torontonians are renowned for.

It was a city that took pride in its accomplishments without boasting and which employed innovation and diligence to create what has become one of the most attractive and envied places to live and raise a family anywhere in the world.

Toronto is where I became a Certified Management Accountant, where I married my beautiful wife and business partner Annette, it’s where we work and chose to raise our two wonderful boys, Kyle 21 and Laird 16, and Scarborough is where we have lived for the past 27 years.

Quite simply, we love it here.

Toronto instilled in me a desire to do more than just enjoy it, but also to give something back, to get involved and take an active role in trying to improve it.

It’s why I believe so strongly in volunteering with organizations like:

  • St. Marks United Church, where our family worships and where I continue to offer my time in support of their charitable causes
    www.st-marks.ca/
  • CanMapp, an accountants advocacy body, where I served as Director
    www.canmapp.ca/

My feelings about serving the community can best be expressed through an acronym: (accountants love acronyms, after all!)

RICH
R Respect
I Integrity
C Compasson
H Honesty

These are the values I will bring to City Council as your representative

It’s why I want to put my career experiences transforming failing companies into fiscal success stories to work making Toronto better; it’s why I feel so passionately about changing the status quo at City Hall that continues to reward incompetence at the expense of taxpayers; it’s why I want to put forward common sense solutions to issues like transportation, the environment, social services and financial reform that will better serve the needs of Toronto residents, and it’s why I will work tirelessly on behalf of those who have felt abandoned and betrayed by representatives that are only interested in helping themselves.

If you share my vision of wanting to make this city the best it can be, you can help.

Vote for me on October 25 for Toronto City Council, Ward 38 Scarborough, and give me the honor and privilege of working for you, for the issues that matter to you and your family, your business and your community.

On election day, vote for positive change.

You deserve it Toronto; we all do.
